                                            Social Skills Program

Hope Academy has made a commitment to its students to integrate a highly sophisticated social skills program into the academic school day.  This focus on social skills within the academic day enables our students to learn valuable life skills and helps the students be more emotionally available for learning.

Our psychologist and counselor have collaborated with the faculty to develop social skills lesson plans that are integrated into each academic subject.  To attain this, each student and faculty member was consulted in order to formulate effective lesson plans.  In this process, group social skills goals were generated as well as individualized goals.  The staff works with students to track the group goals which helps to create a positive learning environment where students’ strengths are recognized, valued and given room to grow.  Faculty helps each student track his/her own individual social goals by working with teachers and an personal advisor to evaluate these goals on a daily basis.

We believe that addressing the various social/emotional issues our students bring with them to school will free them to fully engage in the learning process.   We are invested in creating a caring, safe community where students can learn, explore and become all they can be.

Assisting us in this process are consultants from the SuperKids Social Skills program.  SuperKids is an afterschool therapeutic social skills program and school consulting service.  The directors of the program, Nancy Widdows, LPC and Barbara Cooper, LMHC are both board-certified creative arts therapists and licensed counselors who are authors of:  Knowing Yourself, Knowing Others: Activities That Teach Social Sense and The Social Success Workbook.  They created SuperKids in 1999 to fill a much needed gap in therapeutic services for children with social skills difficulties.  For children and teens who need further help with social skills issues, they have a therapeutic after school program housed here at Hope Academy, as well as groups in their Ridgefield and Norwalk locations.  For more information about SuperKids, visit their website at www.superkids-socialskills.com.
